Lei Guang
Lei Guang joined the political science department at San Diego State University after receiving his PhD from the University of Minnesota in 1999. He has an MA degree in political science from the Johns Hopkins University, and majored in English and American Studies in his college and post-graduate studies in China. He has held visiting fellowships at Stanford University, Yale University, Jawaharlal Nehru University in India, and Tsinghua University in China. He now also directs the Center for Asian and Pacific Studies at SDSU, and the new Chinese Studies and Language Major in Asian Studies.
For research, he is interested in the everyday politics of ordinary citizens, most notably in China, but also in other developing countries such as India. He has studied migrants, peasants, protesters, urban job-seekers and informal-sector workers, as well as the grandiose political discourses surrounding them. He is currently working on projects that have to do with the local state and social conflicts in China and India. His scholarly publications have appeared in numerous edited volumes and in academic journals such as Politics & Society, International Migration Review, Critical Asian Studies, Pacific Review, position: east asia cultures critique, Journal of Contemporary China, China Quarterly, Modern China, Harvard China Review, International Review (Chinese) and Dushu (Chinese).
His teaching repertoire at SDSU includes Chinese Politics, Government and Politics of East Asia, Government and Politics of Developing Areas, International Relations of the Pacific Rim, Politics of Globalization, and Seminar in International Political Economy.
